What is the difference between a bulkhead and a seawall?

A bulkhead is a smaller structure that is normally built on lakes, rivers and ponds.  Whereas a seawall is a wall built to protect against the sea or ocean.

A bulkhead is sometimes referred to as a retaining wall since they are both built to hold back earth.  However, retaining walls prevent land movement while bulkheads are built to protect land from erosion damage at, or near, a water perimeter.
